Elvis Aaron Presley (January 8, 1935 – August 16, 1977) was an American singer and actor. Regarded as one of the most significant cultural icons of the 20th century, he is often referred to as the “King of Rock and Roll” or simply “the King”. His energized interpretations of songs and sexually provocative performance style, combined with a singularly potent mix of influences across color lines during a transformative era in race relations, led him to both great success and initial controversy.

During his lifetime, Presley won 3 Grammy Awards—all for gospel recordings—and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. He was also posthumously honored with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and the Grammy Hall of Fame Award. He also won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for his performance in the film, Change of Habit. Presley was also nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in the film, Jailhouse Rock.

In addition to his music awards, Presley was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986, the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2001, and the Memphis Music Hall of Fame in 2015.
